A Simple Question That Can Change Everything: Why?

Last week, the monthly meeting of the Women in Business Network (WIBN) group took place.

Casual conversation with a few of the ladies, revealed that there was a general feeling of exhaustion and a slight loss of spark when it came to their businesses.

We tried to unpick it a little. For many, it was down to being so busy that they hadn’t had a moment to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the bigger picture of what they were doing.

Do you ever feel this way?

As the meeting went on, the woman who leads our group, Samantha, shared a video that happened to be just what was needed.

We too know what it’s like to feel on a plateaut; despite the strong sense of passion and excitement we had when we started our businesses.

We know how the day-to-day activities of your business can be all-consuming, leaving little time to review how this all fits together with your bigger goals and plans. It’s so crucial though, to periodically check that your actions are in the service of these ambitions.

This video proposes a simple concept that can change everything. How you feel about your business, how you talk about your business and how you present your business to the world.

It emphasises something we talk about relatively often; the fact that people will buy into you, more than into what you do.

It’s what sets apart good companies from great ones. And if you have a think about the organisations you admire and respect, it is probably down to this one thing …

Thinking about why you do what you do and leading with this message. Not with what it is you do or, how you do it but, why.

You can apply this to all your communications avenues: your elevator pitch, how you describe your business to others; the bios/profiles on your social media spaces; the about page on your website or your printed materials.

How can you lead with why it is you do what you do?

Leading with your why is not only likely to be more memorable but you’re also likely to talk with much more passion.

After all, your why is what makes you get out of bed in the morning. It’s what keeps you going through all the challenges that we inevitably face, as business owners. It’s what makes you truly different from all the other practitioners in your field.

So our challenge for you in the next couple of weeks, is to reconnect with your why. See how you can make sure that your sharing it effectively with your audience.

Here’s that inspiring video – a Ted Talk by Simon Sinek.
