Do you think of yourself as a brand?
No, really!
You do have a brand, even if you don’t think you do.
You have your own way of being in the world.
What you wear, where you go, what you think about and read.
That’s you, and that’s your brand.
Decision Time
Right at this moment, potential clients are taking a look at your website, your Facebook page, your Instagram, whatever.
At this point, one of two things will happen:
- They like what they see and stay a little longer. If you have a blog, or an interesting bio, that gives them more of an idea about whether you’re what they’re looking for.
- Or, they don’t like what they see, it’s not easy to understand, so they just move on.
So your choice is not really whether you want to build a brand but whether you want to intentionally build it or not.
Your Brand Is You, On A Good Day
Think about a time when you were really on a roll.
Everything you did was working seamlessly and effortlessly. You felt like you could take on the world!
That’s you, on a good day.
That’s also your brand.
The key to branding is to keep it simple. You need to make it easy for people to make sense of you.
In marketing terms this is the ‘know, like and trust’ factor.
Your audience hasn’t got enough ‘band-width’ to process too much information.
What they want is something simple.
3 Tips On Keeping it Simple
These are the three easiest ways to help you get started with branding.
- Get some great photos taken. Outside, somewhere local. If you’ve got a dog, cat or other pet that would work in a photo, do that! Wear clothes that you love and make you feel good when you wear them.
- Tell your story. Not your entire autobiography but some of it. Write it the way you would tell it to a friend.
- Put some thought into your bio. Show a little personality. Even a short bio can be fun.
Bonus Tip: Do Some Research!
No one will mind being asked for their opinion.
Choose some people you respect and ask them what they think you’re good at.
Then tell them what you think your brand is.
Get their feedback on that too.
Top Tip of All Time!
Write the way you talk.
This isn’t all there is to branding but it’s a really good start.
Nobody built a great brand by trying to be the same as everyone else.
“If you’re always trying to be normal, you’ll never know how amazing you can be!”
Good luck!
